How does FDM 3D printing work?
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is printing by depositing layers of molten thermoplastic. It is the most popular and most economical 3D printing technology – ideal for functional parts, tooling and low-volume production.
An FDM printer heats filament – a thin plastic wire – to melting point and extrudes it through a nozzle layer by layer, building the model from the base upwards. Each layer bonds to the one below, forming a solid, durable structure. Unlike SLA printing (resin cured by laser), FDM works with genuine engineering thermoplastics – Nylon, ABS, ASA – materials whose mechanical properties are close to those used in injection moulding.
That is precisely why FDM is the first-choice technology for functional prototypes and spare parts – where what matters is not only the shape, but real mechanical strength, thermal resistance and durability in service.
Model preparation
The STL or STEP file is divided into layers (sliced) – the software generates the tool paths for the head and the printing parameters for each layer.
Layer-by-layer printing
The head melts the filament and lays it down along the path. The layers bond thermally, forming a solid structure from the base of the model to its top.
Post-processing
After printing we remove the support structures, check the dimensions and – where needed – sand, bond parts together or prepare the surface for painting.
What is FDM printing good for?
FDM is a versatile technology – from single prototypes to production runs, wherever strength and cost matter.
Functional prototypes
Parts for mechanical testing in Nylon or ABS – verifying fit and strength before series production. More about prototyping →
Spare parts
Recreating unavailable components of machines, appliances and vehicles from an original or from photographs. More about making spare parts →
Production tooling
Assembly jigs, machining fixtures, templates and auxiliary tools – cheaper and faster than milling metal.
Low-volume production
Runs of 10-500 pieces with no injection mould cost. You print as many as you need, when you need them.
Mock-ups and design models
Large-scale concept models – architecture, furniture, packaging – where speed of iteration is what counts.
Automotive and servicing
Mounting components, clips, covers and small details for vehicles – especially where the original is out of production.
FDM printing specification
The parameters that genuinely decide whether your part will do the job – accuracy, strength and maximum dimensions.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Dimensional accuracy | from ±0.1 mm (depending on geometry and material) |
| Maximum part dimensions | up to 250 × 250 × 250 mm (larger – in bonded sections) |
| Layer height | 0.1-0.3 mm – selected to match the required surface quality |
| Internal infill | 5-100% – affects the strength and weight of the finished part |
| Materials available | PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, Nylon (PA12), PA-CF |
| Minimum wall thickness | from 0.8 mm – depending on the material and the function of the part |
| Lead time | 1-5 business days (express mode 24-48h for a surcharge) |
FDM printing materials in our range
We focus on technical materials – not just decorative PLA. We match the material to the real working conditions of the part.
The highest resistance to abrasive wear in our FDM range. Gears, bushings, bearing shells – wherever parts move against one another.
A classic engineering material, also used in injection moulding. Good impact strength, can be bonded with acetone and surface-finished.
Mechanical properties like ABS, plus resistance to UV radiation and weathering. For outdoor applications. ASA vs ABS vs PETG comparison →
A good balance of strength and price. Chemically resistant, easy to print, a popular choice for packaging prototypes.
An elastomer for seals, anti-vibration pads and parts that need to bend without cracking.
Carbon-fibre reinforced nylon – stiffness close to metal at a fraction of the weight. For structural parts with demanding requirements.
An FDM order in 4 steps
The whole process is handled remotely – all you need is a 3D file, photos or a description of what you need.
Send the file
Send an STL/STEP file, photos with dimensions, or a description. Give the number of pieces and your preferred material – if you are not sure, we will advise.
Quote in 24h
We check the file, select the printing parameters and material, and send back a binding offer with the price and deadline.
Printing and inspection
We print at optimal settings, remove the supports and check the dimensions before shipping.
Courier shipping
We pack securely and ship by courier or InPost parcel locker. VAT invoice sent electronically.
How much does FDM printing cost?
The cost depends on the volume of material, the printing time and the plastic chosen. Below are typical orders of magnitude. We invoice in PLN; euro amounts are indicative and converted at the current exchange rate.
Up to 50 g of material
60-250 g of material
10-500 pieces
Minimum order value: PLN 50 net (~€12). More about 3D printing quotes →
Frequently asked questions – FDM 3D printing
How does FDM differ from SLA printing?
FDM melts and deposits thermoplastic layer by layer – it is cheaper and produces tougher functional parts. SLA cures resin with a laser – it gives higher precision and smoother surfaces, but at a higher price and with lower mechanical strength. For technical parts we recommend FDM.
Which FDM material should I choose for my project?
It depends on the application: Nylon for friction and dynamic loads, ABS for general strength, ASA for outdoor use (UV), PETG as an all-purpose starting point. Describe the working conditions of the part in the quote form and we will select the material.
Is FDM printing precise enough for fitted parts?
Yes – with accuracy from ±0.1 mm, FDM is suitable for most mechanical fits. Where tolerances are very demanding we say so at the quotation stage and propose appropriate design allowances.
Can I order just one piece?
Yes. We print from a single piece with no minimum quantity (beyond the PLN 50 net minimum order value). Volume discounts apply from 10 pieces upwards.
How long does an FDM order take?
Normally 1-5 business days from acceptance of the quote, depending on volume and complexity. An express mode with 24-48h turnaround is available for a surcharge – tick it in the form.
Is FDM printing suitable for series production?
Yes, for low-volume production – typically 10 to 500 pieces depending on geometry. For larger runs, injection moulding becomes cheaper per piece because of the mould cost.
